Tree braids are officially back, and this time, they’re going viral. The nostalgic protective style, popular in the early 2000s, has resurfaced with a softer, more seamless finish that blends natural hair with loose extensions for a flowing, barely-there look.

Unlike traditional box braids, tree braids involve cornrowing the natural hair while leaving extension strands out throughout the braid, creating the illusion of free-hanging hair with the security of a braided base.

The appeal is clear: versatility. Tree braids can be curled, straightened (with caution if human hair is used), and styled into ponytails or half-up looks. But while the style offers movement and flexibility, maintaining it properly is key to preserving shine, definition, and most importantly, scalp health.

First, prioritize your scalp. Because the foundation consists of cornrows, buildup can accumulate quickly. Use a lightweight, nozzle-tip applicator to apply a diluted sulfate-free shampoo directly to the scalp every two to three weeks. Follow with a light rinse, focusing on gently squeezing the braids rather than rough scrubbing. Dry thoroughly, sitting under a hooded dryer or using a blow dryer on a cool setting prevents mildew and odor.

Moisture is non-negotiable. Even though extensions create the length and fullness, your natural hair still needs hydration. Apply a water-based leave-in spray along the braid base and seal lightly with a nourishing oil such as jojoba or grapeseed. Avoid heavy products that cause tangling or weigh the loose hair down.

To maintain shine and definition, wrap your hair nightly with a satin or silk scarf, or sleep on a silk pillowcase. For curly or wavy tree braids, loosely braid or twist the free-hanging hair before bed to prevent matting and preserve the pattern. A lightweight mousse can also revive curls and tame frizz without stiffness.

Be mindful of tension and longevity. While tree braids are protective, wearing them beyond six to eight weeks can lead to matting at the roots. Schedule timely removal and follow up with a clarifying wash and deep conditioning treatment to restore balance.

With the right care routine, tree braids offer the best of both worlds: protective structure and effortless glam. Their return proves that timeless styles never truly fade, they simply evolve, ready to be rediscovered and redefined.
