For generations, braids have been more than just a hairstyle for Black women and girls, they are a cultural tradition, a form of self-expression, and a protective styling staple. But recent investigations into braiding hair safety have sparked growing concerns about what exactly is being woven into those styles. At the center of the conversation is the Beauty Justice Act and brands like ReBundle, which are advocating for stronger safety standards across the beauty industry.

The Beauty Justice Act is proposed legislation in New York that aims to ban some of the most harmful chemicals from personal care and beauty products. The bill emerged amid increasing concerns about toxic substances found in products disproportionately used by women of color, including braiding hair. Supporters argue that consumers deserve greater transparency and stronger protections when it comes to the products they use regularly.

The urgency behind the legislation intensified following multiple investigations into braiding hair. Consumer Reports testing found heavy metals, including lead, in many braiding hair products and called for increased regulation and industry accountability. The findings renewed discussions about the lack of oversight in a category that millions of consumers rely on.

ReBundle, a Black-owned company known for its plant-based braiding hair made from banana fibers, was among the brands included in recent testing. While the company was found to contain comparatively low levels of lead relative to many products tested, ReBundle publicly acknowledged the findings and stated that it was investigating potential sources of contamination. The company also emphasized its commitment to continuous improvement and raising safety standards across the category.

Founded by Ciara Imani May, ReBundle was created as an alternative to traditional synthetic braiding hair. The brand has long positioned itself around sustainability, scalp comfort, and ingredient transparency, using plant-based materials instead of conventional plastic fibers.

Rather than distancing itself from the broader conversation, ReBundle has used the moment to advocate for stronger testing protocols, greater transparency, and industry-wide accountability. The company has expressed support for efforts that would establish clearer safety benchmarks and encourage manufacturers to more rigorously evaluate their supply chains.

As the Beauty Justice Act continues to gain attention, it represents a larger movement toward safer beauty products for all consumers. For brands like ReBundle, the goal is not simply to create better braiding hair but to help reshape industry standards so that safety, transparency, and health become the norm rather than the exception.
