When it comes to sun protection, most people focus solely on skin, but your hair and scalp need protection too, especially if you spend long hours outdoors.
For Black men, whose grooming routines often prioritize fade maintenance, waves, or loc care, sunscreen for the hair might sound unnecessary. But it’s more important than you think.
The truth is, UV rays don’t discriminate. While melanin-rich skin offers some natural protection, the hair and scalp can still suffer damage from prolonged sun exposure.
UVA and UVB rays can dry out the hair shaft, weaken protein bonds, and fade natural or dyed hair color over time. For Black men with tightly coiled or textured hair, which already tends to be drier, sun damage can lead to increased brittleness, breakage, and scalp sensitivity.
“Think of hair like fabric left in the sun, it fades, weakens, and loses elasticity,” explains Dr. Ayo James, a dermatologist specializing in ethnic skin and hair care. “Textured hair needs moisture and protection to thrive. Sun exposure can rob it of both.”
So how can Black men protect their hair from the sun? The first step is choosing products with built-in UV protection. Look for leave-in conditioners, oils, or styling creams that contain SPF or UV filters. Ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and vitamin E not only nourish the hair but offer mild protection from environmental stressors.
Hats and durags can also be functional sun shields. Wide-brim hats, bucket hats, or even UV-protective durags can block direct sunlight while adding a stylish touch to your summer fits. Just make sure any fabric touching your hair is breathable and non-abrasive.
For those with shaved heads or low fades, scalp sunscreen is a must. Apply a lightweight, non-greasy SPF 30 or higher directly to exposed areas to prevent burns and long-term skin damage.
Ultimately, protecting your crown isn’t just about looks, it’s about health. Incorporating sun protection into your grooming routine can keep your hair strong, hydrated, and looking its best all year long.
