When was the last time you checked the expiration date on your shampoo or conditioner? While hair products don’t always scream “spoiled” the way food does, they absolutely have a shelf life, and using expired products can do more harm than good.

Most shampoos and conditioners are designed to last around 12 to 24 months after opening, but that timeline can shorten depending on how they’re stored.

Exposure to heat, humidity, and air (especially in a steamy bathroom) can degrade the formula faster. Even unopened, the clock starts ticking once the bottle leaves the factory. That means stocking up during sales may not always be a smart move, unless you plan to use them quickly.

So, how can you tell if your hair products are past their prime? Check for changes in texture, smell, or color. If your shampoo is suddenly watery, separates, or smells off, it’s probably time to let it go. Conditioners that feel clumpy, greasy, or unusually thick may have broken down and lost their ability to properly moisturize.

Using expired products won’t always cause visible damage right away, but over time, they may lead to dry scalp, buildup, irritation, or ineffective cleansing. If you’re investing in quality hair care, make sure it’s actually doing its job.

To extend the life of your shampoo and conditioner, store them in a cool, dry place, not directly under the shower spray or near windows. Always close the caps tightly and avoid dipping wet fingers into the product to prevent bacteria from growing.

You can also check the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on the bottle. It usually looks like a little jar icon with a number (like “12M” for 12 months), which tells you how long the product is good for once opened.

Your strands deserve clean, effective care. If you’ve been wondering whether that nearly-empty bottle from last year is still safe to use, err on the side of caution and swap it out. A fresh formula can breathe new life into your routine, and your hair will thank you for it.
