Protective styles are a favourite among Black women for good reason. From box braids and cornrows to twists and sew-ins, these hairstyles help reduce daily manipulation while offering endless styling possibilities.
However, once the extensions come out, your natural curls may need extra attention. Dryness, tangling, shedding, and reduced curl definition can make your hair feel different than before. Fortunately, a thoughtful post-protective-style routine can help restore moisture, strengthen your strands, and bring your beautiful curls back to life.
Start wth a gentle take-down
Healthy curls begin with a careful removal process. Rushing through braids or twists can cause unnecessary breakage, especially when shed hairs become trapped within the style. Work in small sections, gently detangling your hair with your fingers as you go. If you encounter stubborn knots, apply a little conditioner or detangling product to provide slip. Avoid pulling or cutting blindly, as this can damage your natural strands.
Cleanse your scalp and hair
After several weeks in a protective style, product buildup, sweat, and oils can accumulate on your scalp. Use a gentle shampoo to cleanse thoroughly without leaving your hair feeling stripped. Concentrate on your scalp, allowing the lather to travel down your strands as you rinse. If buildup is significant, a second gentle wash may help. Follow with a hydrating conditioner to soften your hair and prepare it for detangling.
Bring back moisture with deep conditioning
Deep conditioning is an important step when reviving curls after a protective style. Choose a treatment containing moisturising ingredients such as aloe vera, glycerin, or fatty alcohols that help soften and condition hair. Apply it according to the product instructions, paying attention to your ends, which are particularly vulnerable to dryness and breakage. Rinse thoroughly and avoid assuming that leaving a treatment on longer will automatically produce better results.

Detangle gently and rediscover your curl pattern
Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle damp, conditioned hair, working from the ends towards the roots. Divide your hair into manageable sections to minimise pulling. Once detangled, apply a leave-in conditioner followed by a curl cream or gel suited to your hair’s needs. Scrunch gently to encourage definition, then allow your curls to air-dry or use a diffuser on a low setting.
Give your hair a rest
Your curls may benefit from a break before your next protective style. Choose loose, low-manipulation hairstyles, sleep with a satin bonnet, and avoid excessive heat. With consistent care, your natural texture can regain softness, manageability, and definition.
