The hair typing system, popularized by stylist Andre Walker, ranges from type 1 (straight) to type 4 (coily), with subcategories A, B, and C to describe texture and density.
For those with natural hair, most textures fall within the 2A to 4C range, each with its own unique needs, challenges, and beauty.
Type 2 hair (2A–2C) is wavy. It’s often fine to medium in density, with a loose S-pattern. It tends to be prone to frizz but not overly dry. Lightweight products like mousses, curl creams, and sulfate-free shampoos work well. Avoid heavy oils that can weigh it down.
Type 3 hair (3A–3C) is curly. It has a defined curl pattern that ranges from loose loops to tighter spirals. Type 3 hair loves moisture, but too much product can cause buildup. Co-washing, deep conditioning, and using a leave-in conditioner can help define curls and fight dryness. Finger detangling and using a wide-tooth comb can preserve curl definition.
Type 4 hair (4A–4C) is coily or kinky. It has tight curls or zigzag patterns and tends to be the most fragile and driest of all textures. Type 4A curls form tight S-patterns, while 4B has a Z-shape pattern, and 4C has tight, densely packed coils with less definition. These textures thrive on deep moisture, protective styles, and gentle handling. Use thick butters, oils like castor or avocado, and low-manipulation styling to prevent breakage and retain length.
Regardless of type, all natural hair benefits from a consistent routine that includes cleansing, conditioning, moisturizing, and protective styling. Pay attention to porosity too—how well your hair absorbs moisture. High-porosity hair needs sealing with heavy oils, while low-porosity hair benefits from light products and heat to help moisture penetrate.
