As New York Fashion Week approaches, the energy in the city begins to hum with anticipation.

Among the many creative forces who help bring runway visions to life, hairstylist Lacy Redway stands out as one of the most in-demand talents in the industry.

Known for her innovative artistry and ability to shape cultural beauty moments, Redway opens up about how she prepares for the whirlwind week that defines the global style calendar.

Preparation for Redway begins long before models hit the runway. “It’s about more than just hair,” she shares. “I have to immerse myself in the designer’s world and understand the full creative direction.” This process often involves weeks of research, mood board collaborations, and consultations with fashion houses to ensure her hair concepts align seamlessly with the collections.

For Redway, her kit is both toolbox and treasure chest. Stocked with essentials like gels, sprays, brushes, and hair extensions, it reflects her commitment to versatility. “I never know what challenges will come backstage, different textures, quick changes, or unexpected adjustments, so I bring everything I need to be ready for any scenario.”

The backstage environment is famously chaotic, but Redway thrives in it. Fashion week often means creating dozens of looks in a matter of hours, while models cycle in and out of chairs. “The key is staying calm,” she says. “Energy is contagious, and if I stay focused and positive, my team and the models feel it too.”

Representation also remains at the core of Redway’s work. As one of the few Black women consistently leading hair for top fashion shows, she makes it a point to honor natural textures on the runway. “It’s important that every model feels seen and celebrated,” she explains. “Backstage isn’t just about hair, it’s about confidence.”

When the lights finally go up and models step onto the catwalk, Redway’s artistry becomes part of the larger story told on stage. But for her, the true reward comes in knowing that her work continues to push fashion toward inclusivity and innovation. “Fashion week is a sprint,” she reflects, “but it’s also an opportunity to leave a lasting mark.”
