Removing locs is a significant decision in a person’s hair journey, and it’s essential to do it correctly to maintain the health of your natural hair.

Whether you’re transitioning from locs to loose hair or simply wanting to change your style, taking the proper steps can prevent damage and ensure the best results.

Step 1: Prepare your hair and mindset

Before starting, set aside enough time for the process. Removing locs is not something to rush, especially if they have been in for a long time. Make sure you have everything you need: a wide-tooth comb, scissors, moisturizing oil (like coconut or olive oil), a detangling spray, and a few towels to protect your surfaces. Patience is key—removing locs can take a few hours, depending on their size, length, and how long they’ve been in.

Step 2: Softening the hair

To begin loosening your locs, apply a generous amount of moisturizing oil or a leave-in conditioner to the length of each loc. This will help soften the hair and make the removal process much easier. If you want to go the extra mile, you can even wrap your hair in a warm, damp towel for about 20 minutes to open up the cuticle and loosen the buildup. This step is crucial for preventing breakage.

Step 3: Start with the ends

Gently start from the ends of each loc, using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to carefully separate the hair. Be mindful of the root—this is the most delicate part of the hair, and tugging too hard could cause unnecessary damage. Slowly work your way up to the base of each loc. Some people choose to use a seam ripper or a specialized tool to ease the process along, but always be gentle and patient.

Step 4: Take breaks and moisturize

If your locs have been in for a long time, your hair might experience some tangling as you remove them. Be sure to take breaks during the process, moisturizing sections of hair as needed to keep it hydrated and manageable. After every few locs, apply a deep conditioning treatment to nourish the hair and prevent dryness.

Step 5: Final care and maintenance

Once all the locs are removed, wash and deep condition your hair. You might want to trim any split ends and give your hair a break before starting your next style. A healthy regimen of moisturizing and gentle detangling will help you embrace your natural hair texture after removing the locs.

By following these steps, you can safely and gently remove your locs, leaving your hair healthy, shiny, and ready for the next chapter in your hair journey.

Do you actually know the proper way to remove your locs ? I hear so many horror stories about clients cutting their hair , taking their hair out and not combing through each section completely being and forced to cut their hair after washing because it’s matted up. YES, this is a full process. It can take hours sometimes because it’s so tedious. When removing your locs locate your hair first. To locate your hair you may have to slide the loc downward from the midpoint or the base , unravel in the opposite direction it is wrapped , or just eyeball it where your hair is separated from the loc. once you locate your natural hair pull it through the loc until it is separated. This is why I do not braid any type of synthetic hair into my clients hair in order to make the take down process easier. Once your hair is separated you can now cut off the access loc. Unravel the remaining wrapping hair and your loc is completely out. The next style is the most important which is the comb out process. I like to use oil, shea butter, or coconut oil to soften the build up. Note these are not products to WET the hair. Demonstrated in this video I’m using @KALEIDOSCOPE HAIR PRODUCTS braid and loc butter. Use code “queenofslay_locs” on your next purchase to receive 15% off .. let me know if this was helpful.
